Let Go of Perfection

I was listening to a podcast a while back when the author said something like, “I love it when people say, ‘The church is full of hypocrites,’ because I can just smile at them and respond, ‘Oh, it isn’t full yet. There is plenty of room for more. You should come with me sometime.’”

I love this response because it is honest. It doesn't buy into the myth that the church is—or should be—a gathering of perfect people. We are all flawed, but we are also working together toward becoming a community shaped by love. That is why it is so important for us to learn how to disagree well and handle conflict thoughtfully.

In the Gospel for this Sunday, Jesus says, “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone.” There is much more to this passage, but even in this first step there is a great opportunity for reconciliation through direct and caring engagement.

In Christ's vision for the church, there is no room for passive-aggressive behavior, the silent treatment, or pretending we weren't hurt. Jesus knows that we are going to hurt one another and be hurt by one another. So, he asks this wonderful group of hypocrites called the church to be honest and humble when we harm one another, to engage one another with care, and to always be bent toward reconciliation.

May you let go of perfection this week,

and may you embrace the holy and uncomfortable work of reconciliation.

Grace and Peace,
Matt+
