Discovers Music Series: Dr. Jim & the Jazz Interns

Timothy’s Perrysburg Foundation is pleased to announce the artists for their Discovers Music Series 2025-26 season. All performances continue to be presented at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, in Perrysburg. The mission of the Foundation is “to clothe, feed and fulfill” and the performances planned for this season will “fulfill” indeed. The 25-26 season features many artists with strong connections to Northwest Ohio, but several are new to our series.

Our season opens Sunday, October 12 with the amazing vocalist “Dr. Jim” Young and the Jazz Interns. Supporting Jim’s vocals, the Jazz Interns include saxophonist Michael Williams, bassist Kevin Eikum, pianist Scott Lavender and Scott Kretzer on drum set.

Dr. Jim Young is the definition of a Renaissance man. Equally at home performing as a soloist, backup singer or bassist, Jim also serves the community as an emergency room physician in his other career. Jim’s unique voice and song styling has been compared to Johnny Mathis. Dr. Young has been a professional musician for over 50 years, the last 20 in the Toledo area. Locally, he has performed at Jazz in the Garden, Lucille’s Jazz Lounge and many other venues. This will be Jim’s first appearance with Discovers.

Conductor, arranger and pianist Scott Lavender, a Findlay native, has just concluded many years touring with the aforementioned Johnny Mathis. Scott, a BGSU alum, has enjoyed am extensive career as a symphonic pops conductor, appearing across the country and in Canada with orchestras including the Detroit, Atlanta and Baltimore Symphonies and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Bassist Kevin Eikum has appeared numerous times in the Discovers series, most recently in May 2025 with Ramona Collins. Kevin performs frequently in the area, particularly with Sixth Edition and as the bassist in the Toledo Jazz Orchestra. Mike Williams, saxophonist and Scott Kretzer, drums, complete the ensemble accompanying Dr. Young. Both have extensive performing experience in Northwest Ohio with numerous groups. Kretzer also is a recognized music educator, serving on the faculties of Heidelberg University and Adrian College..
