Greetings to the church in your home l Aug. 17, 2014

I have a friend who carries her camera with her and is always looking for opportunities to take photographs of crosses that she sees as she travels. Now that may not seem very unusual, but my friend is not looking for obvious crosses but for the crosses that other people may not see.

My friend explained this process to my daughter Emma and that sparked Emma's interest, so she has begun to look for crosses in unusual places. The photograph to the right is one that Emma took when she was on vacation in Pennsylvania. Now you may look at the photograph and think that the cross on the top of the tower is too small to really identify, but the cross that Emma saw is the one made by the two intersecting pathways.

The cross is the symbol of Christianity for many reasons. It is a reminder, it is a challenge, it is a source of comfort, it can be a rallying point. For us, as Christians, the cross very often is a way to remember that the Lord wants to be involved in our everyday lives. Sometimes though we need to be looking or will miss what it is the Lord is doing or wants to do in and through our lives.

So this week I would like to encourage us all to be looking for the cross in our lives in places and events where we might not otherwise expect it. Maybe it will be a in conversation with a friend, maybe it will be in how we respond to the driver who cuts us off in traffic, maybe it will be when we recognize the extra time and effort someone in a bank or another institution will take to serve us. Be prepared to be surprised because you never know when the cross will appear in your life.

How will you and I see the cross this week and how will you and I respond?

Shalom, Mike
