Greetings to the church in your home l November 30, 2014

Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go..

While my immediate family of origin lived on the same side of the river as both sets of grandparents, the lyrics of this old song still bring forth nostalgic memories. We'd drive up the South Ridge Road, skating to a rapid halt outside St. Stephen's just as the 10 am bell began to ring on Thanksgiving Day (you just couldn't rush milking cows to get there any earlier!). After worship, we'd head back a quarter mile to make a quick turn onto Steinmaier Road. Then we'd negotiate a series of twisting uphill curves taking us past the 1850's "old" church cemetery, cousin Esther's house, and finally crest the hill holding Grandma and Grandpa Wolfrum's home (in which my grandmother was born). We'd throw open the back door to be greeted by over-heated steam-laden air, rich with scents of roasting turkey, bread dressing (and at least three other starches), pungent apple and pumpkin pies. There we joined the din of a house filled with aunts, uncles, cousins, my grandfather's wry wit and the always-open-armed embrace of my earth-mother grandmother. For at least a few hours, all was right with the world as the extended clan of Wolfrums crowded around the dining room table (and the extra places set on the other side of the living room arch) to pause from our various lives and give thanks. Farm-based families as well as city-slicker aunts, uncle and cousins would enjoy the glad reunion brought by the Thanksgiving holiday.

This year's celebration will bring a different iteration of that old ritual - when, following St. Tim's 10 am liturgy, Kay's immediate family (a mother, brother, sister-in-law, their kids and for the first time, two "significant" dates) will throw open the rectory's front door to be greeted by air steam-laden with scents of roasting turkey, bread dressing, veggies, pungent apple and pumpkin pies. They will indeed have traveled "over the river and through the woods" to arrive here, but old patterns will be made new in the glad reunion brought by the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be tear drops as those not present - some watching from the Church Triumphant, others unable to make their way here (if you catch sight of our children, Adam and Tori, along Macy's Parade route, wave for us!) - are remembered.

Wherever and however you observe the holiday, take a moment (or more) to pause and ponder with awe and thanksgiving the gifts and graces with which you've been blessed by God. Then literally or figuratively, go over the river and through the woods...
