Little Children, Let Us Love

Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.
-1 John 3:18

The phrase “actions speak louder than words” comes to mind when I read this verse.  This ancient letter to first century believers helps them to address a tendency toward ease or even laziness. The author knew that if love was reduced in such ways it would turn into platitudes and empty words.  We are challenged by John’s letter to make sure our love is accompanied by energy and action as well as sincerity and truth.

We have recently begun a flurry of activity around St Tim’s.  We have an entire wing that is under construction that will soon rescue food and use it to help heal food insecurity.  I encourage you to look at this flurry of activity and name it Love. Soon the Clothesline will be displaced out into hallways and other rooms. When we encounter these clothes, we will know they are the remnants of a deep love in action.  And when we offer to give rides to church, write letters to one another, and reach out with phone calls, food, company and prayers we are filling the word Love with meaning and truth.

May you see that love surrounds you this week, and may your actions bring others into the deep knowledge that they are loved too.
